Facial Filler FAQs

What is a facial filler?

Facial fillers consist of hyaluronic acid.  Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar in our bodies.  The hyaluronic acid is packaged as a smooth gel formulation. Several different gel formulations are available and each addresses a specific and unique problem.

How does facial fillers work?

Due to the ability of hyaluronic acid to hold moisture, fillers are predominantly used to replace lost volume in certain areas. A facial filler can revitalise the appearance of the skin by reducing or smoothing lines, wrinkles and folds. The filler can restore volume in the chin and cheeks (giving the appearance of a “lift”). It can also redefine and reshape the lips. The gel is injected by your doctor with a super fine needle under your skin.

Why may I need a facial filler?

Young skin is constantly moisturized by natural occurring hyaluronic acid. As we age our skin starts to lose hyaluronic acid and when this happens our skin loses its youthful look. Other factors that contribute to the change of our skin with age are: sun damage, loss of bone mass, loss of fat underneath the skin and gravity. The net effect is drier skin, sagging, lines and wrinkles.

How long does the effect of facial fillers last?

Effects may last up to 18 months depending on the area of treatment and the type and volume of product used. Factors such as age, quality of skin, lifestyle and general health may also affect the duration of results.

Is treatment with facial fillers painful?

Prior to treatment a numbing agent is applied to the skin. A lot of the facial filler formulations also contain an anaesthetic that makes the treatment more comfortable.

How long does a facial filler treatment take?

A thorough consultation with your doctor is essential prior to treatment. During this consultation an appropriate treatment plan will be discussed. The actual injections take about 5-10 minutes per site treated.

Will I need to take time off work after a facial filler treatment to recover?

No. You may return to normal activities right after treatment though you are advised to avoid alcohol , extreme temperatures, sun exposure and strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment.  This will help reduce possible swelling, redness and itching.
It is however advised not to receive facial filler treatment within 3 weeks of an important event such as a wedding.

What are the most common side effects of facial fillers?

There may be mild redness and bruising following the treatment. These effects can easily be covered by make- up and usually recovers within a day or two. Swelling may last for up to 7-10 days in some cases
In the event of an undesired outcome or reaction, the filler treatment can be neutralized.

Can I have Botox and a facial filler treatment at the same time?

If different areas of the face is treated then it can potentially be done in the same session. Your doctor will advise you on the best course of action.
